Reactions of Fluoride Ion with Hydroxyapatite by Harold G. Mccann

چکیده
A problem of long standing in the study of dentin and enamel is the exact nature and structure of the inorganic material in these tissues. A review of these studies from the time of Berzelius in 1845 up to 1949 has been published by Armstrong (1). In general the mineral component of teeth as well as bones consists chiefly of a basic calcium phosphate which is most probably hydroxyapatite (2, 3). Hydroxyapatites may be synthesized in the laboratory and their basic chemistry and reactions studied directly. The use of a synthetic hydroxyapatite instead of the natural hydroxyapatites, as may be found in teeth and bones, avoids possible complications introduced by extraneous chemicals present. in the natural materials. Chemical methods devised to study the synthetic apatites may then be adapted for study of natural tooth substance. At the same time information is obtained concerning basic chemical reactions which take place and the effects of varying conditions on these basic reactions. In these experiments we have been concerned for obvious reasons (4, 5) primarily with reactions between the fluoride ion and synthetic hydroxyapatite.

متن کاملTheories on the mode of action of fluoride in reducing dental decay.
Several properties of the fluoride ion at physiological concentrations are known which may be concerned with its actions in reducing dental caries. T h e properties that have been most thoroughly studied as a basis of the anticaries action are: (I) the incorporation of fluoride in the hydroxyapatite of the calcified tissues, both during and after their formation, thus increasing the proportion ...
متن کاملPhosphate exchange in hydroxylapatite, enamel, dentin, and bone. II. Effect of fluoride on the exchange.
In previous studies of the reactions of fluoride ion with synthetic hydroxylapatite and powdered enamel and dentin (1,2), it was thought that low concentrations of fluoride ion might be affecting the rate of recrystallization of the apatites. Neuman et al. (3) found that fluoride impregnation had no effect on calcium and phosphate exchange of glycol-ashed bone. The experiments described below w...
متن کاملPreparation and characterization of fluorinated porcine hydroxyapatite.
Simple chemical and thermal treatments were applied to prepare fluorinated porcine hydroxyapatite (FPHA). Morphology of FPHA was observed using SEM. Physiochemical characteristics, namely crystalline phase, chemical composition, functional groups, and binding energy of fluorine were investigated using XRD, EDX, FTIR, and XPS respectively. Concentration of free fluoride ion released from FPHA in...
متن کاملHydroxyapatite, fluor-hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite produced via the sol–gel method: dissolution behaviour and biological properties after crystallisation
Hydroxyapatite (HA), fluor-hydroxyapatite (FHA) with varying levels of fluoride ion substitution and fluorapatite (FA) were synthesised by the sol-gel method as possible implant coating or bone-grafting materials. Calcium nitrate and triethyl phosphite were used as precursors under an ethanol-water based solution. Different amounts of ammonium fluoride were incorporated for the preparation of t...
